When Jonathan Juca first came across Sound Academy, he felt immediate relief. After a long search for a hands-on audio engineering course that was both professional and accessible, he had finally found the right fit. “When I got the call from Sound Academy, I was delighted to speak to a real person who truly understood music and how they could help,” he recalls.
Before enrolling in Sound Academy, Jonathan was a student at SEEV Academy, a music business school based in Puerto Rico focused on helping artists and professionals navigate the industry's complexities. While there, he was constantly surrounded by producers, engineers, and creatives — but he had yet to step into a technical role himself. That changed when he joined Sound Academy in New York. “I was ready to take that next step. Although Jonathan had spent time in studios before, he had never operated the gear himself. “At first, it was a bit overwhelming,” he admits, “but I’m also a DJ, so I understood the fundamentals of sound. Once we started working on Pro Tools, learning signal flow, and setting up real sessions, it all started to click.” Thanks to the patience and expertise of his instructor, House Engineer and Producer at Quad Studios NYC Lucho, Jonathan was able to master the fundamentals quickly. “Lucho made sure everyone understood what they needed, no matter their level. I missed one day and still got all the material to catch up — that level of support meant a lot.” By the end of the course, Jonathan had gained the confidence to run his own sessions — and it paid off.
“I recently ran sound for a college event and actually had a studio engineer from New Jersey pull me aside and offer me his contact, just because I took the time to check my levels properly. That’s something I learned directly at Sound Academy,” says Jonathan. He also had a chance encounter with Puerto Rican artist Myke Towers, a favorite of his, and was able to make an impression with his technical know-how. Now, Jonathan is being invited to future recording sessions in New York, putting his training to use and building valuable industry relationships.
The Sound Academy program put him in the right environment to succeed. The fundamentals in recording, mixing and mastering have become a vital part of his success. Jonathan will now use these new found skills and demonstrate his value within the latin music community, and use these skills to propel his career going forward. Jonathan shares. “Now that I have both business and technical knowledge, I’m ready to become a true asset in this industry. Whether it’s studio work, DJing, or managing sessions, I’m prepared because I have the fundamentals.” The fundamentals will allow him to grow as he continues to apply what he learned in real time situations and make an impact in his community.
