David Robinson: From Gospel Roots to Studio Success at Sound Academy

David Robinson’s journey into music began in the heart of the church. Growing up with a gospel singer father, David was surrounded by soul-infused melodies and the spirit of live performance. As a live sound engineer for his church, he developed a strong foundation—but he knew he wanted to take his skills further and bring his passion for gospel and soul into the studio. That’s when he found Sound Academy.

Discovering Sound Academy on Instagram

David first came across Sound Academy through an Instagram ad featuring an A$AP Rocky track. The blend of modern production and industry credibility immediately caught his attention. After an in-depth call with an advisor, he put the idea on hold—until a few months later, when he reconnected with Dallin Burns, who made the enrollment process seamless and pressure-free. “The process was comforting—no pressure. It felt like the right time and the right move.”

Stepping Into a Legendary Studio Environment

One of the biggest draws for David was the opportunity to train inside Quad Studios, one of New York’s most iconic music studios. Coming from a live audio background, he was eager to learn how studio engineering worked in a professional setting. Though it was a challenge at first, especially learning to record artists, the hands-on repetition made all the difference. “It started as a struggle, but once I began recording myself and understanding the workflow, it all started to click.”

Instructor Support and Community Vibes

At Sound Academy, David formed a strong bond with his instructor, Lucho, and the rest of his cohort. The supportive environment, personalized teaching, and real industry insights gave him the confidence and clarity he was looking for. “There was never a moment I felt uncomfortable. Lucho and I aren’t far apart in age, and I really want to stay in touch with him.” Beyond the technical skills, it was the networking and peer connections that truly made the experience invaluable. David still stays in contact with many of the people he met during the course.

Music Is a Lifelong Path

Today, David is continuing his growth as a musician, engineer, and creative. He’s taking vocal and piano lessons, studying music theory, and mastering Pro Tools to keep producing and evolving his sound. “No matter what I do in life, music will always put me at ease. I’ll do this as long as I breathe.” David will continue music for the rest of his life as he seeks to create a lucrative career with his new found skills.

David’s Advice to New Students

If you're considering taking your music career to the next level, David has one piece of advice:

“Sound Academy is one of the best decisions you can make early in your career. The connections, the knowledge—it’s all there.”
